  • Common Questions
How long does it take to carry out a lift inspection?
How long does it take to carry out a lift inspection?

Lifts by law must go through a thorough examination. A competent person must conduct it, and typically it takes one to three hours. However, specific timing is dependent on lift type, its age and the distance required to travel, alongside its overall condition.

The competent professional will also determine the level of testing that has to take place, considering common practice, standards and industry guidelines.

If as a result of an inspection, you are made aware of severe defects, hazards and dangers, you are responsible for putting the lift out of service without delay.

What safety considerations must I be aware of when maintaining a lift?
What safety considerations must I be aware of when maintaining a lift?

There are a series of directives and pieces of legislation governing the install, maintenance and inspections of lifts. These are in addition to the manufacturer’s guidelines which also need following.

The two main bits of law that lifts are subject to in the UK are the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). Also, standards such as the Equality Act 2010 which speaks to a requirement for disabled access at workspaces, and BS EN 81-80.

Under these, the company or individual is deemed the duty holder who is responsible for conducting inspections and examination, as well as ensuring the safe use of the lift.

It too remains of critical importance that these statutory duties occur at the regular intervals outlined in the law. Here it states inspections being done every 6 months for lifts and associated equipment used to transport persons, as well as lifting accessories themselves; and 12 months for any other type of lifting apparatus).

    Why does my lift breakdown?
    Why does my lift breakdown?

The central cause of lift breakdowns is a lack of servicing. When building owners and property managers fail to put in place preventative measures, the associated outcomes only compound with time.

A lack of vision and insight causes many lift operators to forget that when dealing with moving components, the risk of wear and tear is always present. In many instances, it’s a case of underinvestment into the lift itself, however, saving money today often causes you to spend out multiple times later.

Just think of the amount of time your lift might be out of service because you didn’t opt for a maintenance contract, or fix niggling issues right away. As with all machinery, constant servicing is what gives it continual life and reduces the risk of decommissioning.

Will I need more than a single lift installed at my building?
Will I need more than a single lift installed at my building?

When resolving this matter, keep in mind  a need to alleviate congestion, especially when balancing the peak usage times against that of the journey itself and the number of floors at your premises.

We can help you in calculating the expected capacity required, whether this is the weight of persons using your lift or the load of the goods it is transporting.

In carrying out this action, there are a series of guidelines we can walk you through relating to calculations, your average amount of users and distribution both within the lift itself and across your property at large.
